SMITHFIELD, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia State Police say One man died after a two-vehicle crash in Smithfield Wednesday night.
State police said in a news release troopers were called to the are of Route 644 (Bowling Green Road), south Route 602 (Longview Drive), around 9:20 p.m.
Preliminary investigations found 30-year-old Dustin J. Williams was driving a 2012 Jeep Wrangler north on Route 644 faster than the speed limit when he crossed over into the southbound lanes and sidewiped a 2002 Acura.
State police said Williams’ Jeep overturned in the crash, causing him and a passenger to be ejected. Neither person was wearing a seat belt.
Williams died at the scene, while the passenger was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center with major injuries. The driver of the Acura was taken to Sentara Obici Hospital with not life-threatening injuries, state police said.
State police said speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
The crash closed Route 644 during the overnight hours. Isle of Wight County officials said in a tweet Thursday morning that the roadway was reopened.
